ExperTech Series: Internet Security

To the end-user, the World Wide Web feels safe and anonymous. But step into the Internet underground to consider the multitude of security threats facing businesses today, and most of us realize that it is neither safe nor anonymous. Businesses rely on the global network more heavily than ever, and with that comes risk. Threats today come in a variety of forms: from data interception techniques to steal credit card numbers to nefarious denial of service (DoS) attacks, which can bring e-commerce giants to their knees.

This course begins with an overview of the Internet and emphasizes the importance of businesses addressing security threats. We look at secure protocols (e.g., Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)) relying on cryptography to counter eavesdropping and identity theft. A variety of firewalls, which prevent incursions into network resources, are examined. Participants consider a large variety of Internet security issues and solutions, examining fundamentals, details, and market trends in the vital security industry. Finally, we discuss key players and their products in the Internet security industry today.
