The archetypal Irish sporting stories, recounting the adventures of a hastily transplanted and somewhat adrift British Resident Magistrate to rural County Cork, various flavors of hilarity ensue, with a lot of sporting japery and the understanding that there are certain parts of the world where the traditionally accepted rules do not apply. E. ? Somerville was in fact Edith Oenone Somerville, an Irish author, working in partnership with "Martin Ross" who was in actuality her cousin Violet Florence Martin. Somerville was among other things, a bruising rider to hounds, an Irish Nationalist, and an active suffragette with a speciality in rebel songs. She was devastated by the death of Violet in 1915 (fuelling speculation that in all likelihood their partnership was likely romantic rather than simply creative), and continued to write under their pen names claiming to be in contact with her through seances and mediumship.…
