Synopsis

This collection of papers is from Materials Week '93 held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, October 17-21, 1993. Phase diagrams are a construction of phase equilibria data that have applications in both science and technology. The diagrams are available in handbooks for most binary and selected ternary systems and have long been used by materials engineers in alloy and process design. Diagrams for higher order systems are not normally available, which requires engineers to infer the behaviour of complex industrial systems. However, with the advent of computers, software is now being developed to store, retrieve and predict phase diagrams that apply to higher order systems. In addition, sophisticated models tht predict microstructural changes during solidification and heat treatment are being developed. These require phase diagrams that are accurate for multi-component industrial alloys. The purpose of this book is to present current work being performed, and to assess the impact of modern investigative methods on phase diagram measurements.
