Experimental Multimedia Systems for Interactivity and Strategic Innovation

Multimedia has evolved with the introduction of interaction, allowing and encouraging users to control and navigate through content. Experimental multimedia is a new human-computer communication method that allows for the reinvention and redevelopment of user content. Experimental Multimedia Systems for Interactivity and Strategic Innovation presents the next evolutionary step of multimedia where interactivity meets targeted creativity and experimentation. In providing the basic framework for experimental multimedia through case studies that allow the reader to appreciate the design of multimedia systems, this publication’s audience extends beyond new media artists to scientists, publishers, and developers who wish to extend their system designs to offer adaptive capabilities combined with multimedia content and dynamic interaction. This publication presents a collection of carefully selected theoretical and applied research chapters with a focus on matters including, but not limited to, aesthetics in publishing, e-health systems, artificial intelligence, augmented reality, human-computer interaction, interactive multimedia, and new media curation.

Ioannis Deliyannis is an appointed Lecturer in the field of Interactive Multimedia and Digital Technology at the Department of Audiovisual Arts at Ionian University, Corfu, Greece since 2010. His research interests include the application of Interactive and Multimedia Communication Technologies in the area of Audiovisual Arts. He is the author of a series of journal and conference publications in the above fields, followed by a series of books targeting the experimental and creative aspects of the technologies involved. He completed his undergraduate studies (B.Sc.) and was subsequently offered a scholarship to pursue a Ph.D degree in the field of Interactive Multimedia at the University of Wales Swansea. He holds a Computer Science Degree (1997, University of Wales Swansea) and a Ph.D in the field of Interactive Multimedia (2002, University of Wales Swansea). He worked within the Computational Fluid Dynamics research team as a research student under the supervision of Professors P. Townsend and M. F. Webster. His research work was largely related with multi-media applications, visualisation and web-based technologies applied to complex scientific fields such as Computational Rheology and the development of Educational Systems for Research and Interactive Learning. This work was truly groundbreaking in the field forming a highly respected thesis on the subject. It led to wide public exposure and a deeper understanding of the systems involved. This work is actively utilised and extended under the Institute for Non-Newtonian Fluid Mechanics and Swansea CFD research group. Today he is a founding member of the inArts Research Laboratory (inArts.eu) and a member of the faculty of Music and Audiovisual Arts at Ionian University.

Petros A. Kostagiolas is Assistant Professor of information services management in the Department of Archive, Library Science and Museology, Faculty of Information Science and Informatics at Ionian University, Corfu, Greece.
