Experiments On The Red And Quill Peruvian Bark: With Observations On Its History, Mode Of Operation, And Uses; And On Some Other Subjects Connected With The Phænomena And Doctrines Of Vegetable Astringents. Being A Dissertation Which Gained The First Prize Given By The Harveian Society Of Edinburgh, Ralph Irving presents a historically informed and methodical study of Cinchona bark (Peruvian and related varieties). The work opens with notes on the bark’s nomenclature, origin, and early European reception, then proceeds to detailed chemical and pharmacological experiments. Irving technicianizes the bark through infusion, decoction, and various solvents, analyzing extractives, aromatic constituents, and the fixed-air chemistry of its astringency. He compares red and pale bark, investigates the effects of boiling, lime-water, and alkalis, and explores the bark’s fermentative behavior and potential for tinctures and inks. Beyond chemistry, the dissertation discusses therapeutic uses, cautions in dosing, and the bark’s place in fever treatment, ophthalmia, and other debilities, arguing for a nuanced, mixed-principle approach rather than a single mechanism.
