An Explanation of Catholic Morals

What is conscience, and by what authority does it bind the soul?

What gives an action its moral weight and fixes responsibility before God?

How do virtue and vice shape the interior order of the person and the health of society?

What grounds justice, duty, and obligation beyond private judgment and social fashion?

How does Catholic moral teaching govern concrete acts in daily life?

Explanation of Catholic Morals offers clear and authoritative answers to these questions through a disciplined exposition of moral theology rooted in Scripture, reason, and the enduring teaching of the Church. Written by Rev. John H. Stapleton at the opening of the twentieth century, this work presents moral life as an ordered participation in divine law rather than a matter of sentiment, preference, or cultural mood.

Against the moral confusion produced by modern subjectivism and the erosion of objective standards, Stapleton unfolds a vision of Catholic morality shaped by hierarchy, duty, virtue, and the final end of man in God. Each chapter guides the reader toward a formed conscience, a stable moral judgment, and a life governed by truth rather than impulse. This volume stands as a sober, traditional guide for readers who seek moral clarity amid the disarray of modernity and who desire to recover the coherence and seriousness of Catholic moral teaching.
