Explanatory Notes Upon the Four Gospels, and the Acts of the Apostles

Explanatory Notes Upon The Four Gospels, And The Acts Of The Apostles by Joseph Trapp presents a practical, verse-by-verse biblical commentary designed for general readers. It supplies translational aids for Greek and Hebrew terms, along with extensive historical-cultural background to illuminate Jewish customs, early Christian settings, and the social-political milieu of the Gospel era. The work emphasizes gospel harmony, cross-referencing among parallel accounts (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) to resolve apparent contradictions, and offers theological exposition on the identity of Christ, the kingdom of God, miracles, and the moral and doctrinal implications of Jesus’ teaching. It also includes practical notes on faith, repentance, discipleship, church authority, judgment, forgiveness, and eschatology. Notable topics cover Jesus’ miracles and debates with religious leaders, parables on discipleship and righteousness, the Passion narrative and its timeline, the Law and the Prophets in relation to Jesus, and key doctrinal questions such as apostolic authority and the meaning of the gates of Hell. The tone remains traditional Protestant, with occasional polemics against Catholic readings, aimed at educated lay readers seeking clear, philological, and contextual guidance for interpreting the Gospels.
