Sur la route qui le m�ne � Paris, il rencontre le marquis Albert de Chamery, qu'il abandonne sur une �le d�serte apr�s un naufrage, avant d'usurper son identit�. Aid� par les conseils de son ancien mentor sir Williams qu'il parvient � retrouver, Rocambole se met en qu�te de toujours plus de pouvoir. Il ambitionne ainsi d'�pouser Conception de Sallandrera, la fille d'un Grand d'Espagne qui vit � Paris, mais qui est d�j� fianc�e � son cousin, Don Jos�.

Pierre Allexia Joseph, Ferdinand de Ponson du Terrail, connu sous le titre de vicomte de Ponson du Terrail, n� le 8 juillet 1829 � Montmaur et mort le 20 janvier 1871 � Bordeaux, est un �crivain fran�ais. �crivain populaire, il a �crit 200 romans et feuilletons en vingt ans. Personnage phare du roman populaire, c'est l'un des maitres du roman-feuilleton, notamment c�l�bre pour son personnage Rocambole, dont le nom est pass� dans la langue fran�aise avec l'adjectif � rocambolesque �. Sa mort pr�matur�e est due en partie aux souffrances et aux fatigues endur�es lors de son engagement dans la guerre de 1870.
