Together we will explore of the surface and sub-surface of the Earth, the sub-branches of geology, including mineralogy, petrology (rocks), palaeontology (fossils), geochemistry, seismology (earthquakes), engineering geology, and many more.

The scientific method used by all scientists as well as geologists, is explained, and its philosophy of investigation by observation and experimentation with deductive reasoning is outlined. You will gain an understanding of measurement and data collection the use of units of measurement, scientific notation and general application of the Metric System. Accuracy, validity and reliability of measurement and observation is also included.

Practical research outdoors in the field is supported by some skill videos and the application of geological mapping, as well as research ideas.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Dr. Peter Scott is an award-winning teacher of Earth Science of over forty years' experience in both Secondary and Tertiary Education. He holds a Bachelors' Degree, two Masters' Degrees and a Doctorate including many years on his own field research correlating coal measures in parts of Australia. His interest in Geology has taken him to many parts of the world, including Eastern Antarctica, the Andes, the European and New Zealand Alps, North Africa, Indonesia and many other places in Asia and the Pacific. This book is part of the ADVENTURES IN EARTH SCIENCE series, 8 books, or one compendium issue. Dr. Scott has found that his studies and research for teaching this subject has led him into a number of adventurous situations such as climbing ice walls, exploring deep caves and mines, rock climbing in the European Alps and the Andes, sailing in Tall Ships and trekking across volcanoes.
