Octavo, brown cloth, gilt spine titles, 414 339 pp. Text volumes of a mid 19th century narrative report by U.S. Navy lieutenant William Lewis Herndon describing his 1851-1852 government sponsored expedition from Lima, over the Andes, and down the Amazon to Pará, Brazil. Lacking color map in volume one, both maps in volume two present, though one of these is detached, and the other has a 2.5 inch unobstrusive tear near where it is attached to book. Toning and foxing to pages, early owner's signature to title page and front pasteodwn (v2), early bookplate to front pastedown (v1), wear and chipping to covers and spine ends, mildly cocked spine (v2).
