EXPLORATIONS IN PERSONALITY, A CLINICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF FIFTY MEN OF COLLEGE AGE BY THE WORKERS AT THE HARVARD PSYCHOLOGICAL CLINIC, Henry A. Murray, softcover, 1962 edition of 1938 book originally published by Oxford University Press. BOOK CONDITION: good. The text block is in fine condition with no dog ears, marks, or tears. The wraps are in fairly good condition (age-toning, shelf rubbing, crease in lower righthand corner of front cover, reading creases on spine). 8 ½ x 5 ½, 761 pages, 27 ounces XX [From the back cover] What is meant by "personality"? How can personality be adequately described? What experiences determine personality? To what degree? In what manner? Based on a groundbreaking three-year study of 50 college-age men, this modern classic joins the insights and experience of 28 behavioral scientists in the first major exploration of the variables that compose personality and ways in which they can be measured. Data was accumulated from intensive interviews, specially-devised experiments, autobiographies, conversations, childhood memories, free association hours, sexual development history, and from exhaustive series of psychological tests to measure predictive abilities, aesthetic appreciation, level of aspiration, memory failure, ethical standards, sensorimotor learning and emotional conditioning. Drawing on this extraordinary fund of information, reported on in detail in this volume, Dr. Murray and his associates set forth an all-encompassing theory of personality, and demonstrate, in an 87-page case study, the accuracy with which a complete personality profile can be compiled. XX To begin a study of this nature is not a step but a great advance in the right direction. If there is any hope of dissolving bias and water-tight compartment thinking from which psychology has suffered, it is along the lines that these men have traveled (THE NEW YORK TIMES). XX [Wikipedia] In 1937, Murray became director of the Harvard Psychological Clinic. In 1938 he published Explorations in Personality, a classic in psychology, which includes a description of the Thematic Apperception Test. In 1943 Murray helped complete Analysis of the Personality of Adolph Hitler, commissioned by OSS boss Gen. William "Wild Bill" Donovan. At Harvard University, from 1959 to 1962 he conducted a series of psychologically damaging and purposefully abusive experiments on minors and undergraduate students, one of whom was Ted Kaczynski, later known as the Unabomber.
