Exploration and discovery are conceived in the broadest sense in this work, which encompasses all chronological periods and all sorts of adventurers--aviators, mountaineers, and underwater and space explorers as well as those who promoted exploration. Lesser-known individuals, including women and non-Europeans, round out the 320 biographical profiles. Unsigned articles of varying length emphasize the historical significance and results of the biographee's endeavors. The limitations of this largely biographical approach are mitigated by a detailed subject index and lists by nationality and area explored. The greater inclusiveness of material makes this a more useful source than the recent World Explorers and Discoverers ( LJ 6/15/92). This new title is clearly written and accessible to both secondary school students and adults. Recommended especially for school and public libraries.
