Exploring the Charm of Chinese Language: The Chinese Figure of Speech "Dui Ou" and Chinese Language Pedagogy

Dui Ou is one of the most common figures of speech in the Chinese language. The form and function of Dui Ou reflect various connotations in Chinese culture. In this book, several characteristics of Dui Ou are explored to attempt a combination of Dui Ou and Chinese language pedagogy. In the first section, the particular cultural connotation and thought characteristics of the Chinese people as reflected by Dui Ou are explained. In the second section, major categories of Dui Ou, such as Zheng Dui, Fan Dui, and Chuan Dui, are introduced and analyzed with concrete examples. Furthermore, Dui Ou sentences are divided and categorized according to their linguistic structures and compared with“Antithesis,” a widely used figure of speech in the English language. The goal of this categorization and comparison is to aid foreign students in mastering Chinese writing skill with ease. In the third section, an instruction program of Dui Ou is presented to make Dui Ou an integral part of Chinese language classes. Through the basic writing method of various categories of Dui Ou, foreign students may obtain and utilize Dui Ou effectively in their daily study, life, and work.
