Exploring Crime Fiction (Routledge Studies in Twentieth-Century Literature)

Georges Simenon’s commissaire Maigret is often associated with Paris, yet nearly one-third of the 103 Maigret novels and short stories take place outside the capital. Among these, the Normandy coast emerges as a recurring setting, featured not only in several Maigret narratives but also in Simenon’s early pulp fiction and later non-Maigret novels. In this book, Bill Alder explores Simenon’s fictions set along the Normandy coast, examining the region’s significance in the author’s personal and literary development. By situating these works within their historical and social contexts, Alder uncovers the realities that shaped their creation and the broader questions they raise about twentieth-century crime fiction.

The book combines literary analysis with guided tours of six key locations, allowing readers to follow in the footsteps of Simenon’s characters. Through this journey, it highlights the importance of the Normandy coast in Simenon’s storytelling and its role in shaping the genre of crime fiction.

This book is ideal for fans of Simenon, crime fiction enthusiasts, and readers intrigued by the interplay between literature and place. It offers a unique perspective on Simenon’s work, blending historical insight with an immersive exploration of the landscapes that inspired his stories.
