Prodehl (U. of Karlsruhe) and Mooney (USGS) recount the global history of seismological studies exploring the Earth's crust and uppermost mantle using controlled sources from 1850 to 2005. Separate chapters describe the major scientific and technical advances achieved during the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and 21st century in terms of data acquisition, processing technology, and interpretation methods. The end of each chapter focuses on seismic reflection and refraction projects carried out in the oceans. Color and b&w maps of field measurements and interpreted Moho contours are provided.
