Exploring Scotland's Historic Landscapes Hardly any part of Britain is untouched by man and even the most remote areas are rich in evidence of past human activities if you know how to uncover it. The aim of this book is to show that with a little understanding of how the landscape has developed and a little time to look at it properly tremendous pleasure can be derived from a walk or drive in the town or in the countryside.
This book consists of eighteen trails which cover features which are important for understanding how the Scottish landscape has developed over the centuries. Each trail relates to a particular type of landscape feature or period but all, of course, do contain features from a variety of sources and periods and these are investigated to provide a complete picture of the particular theme. Landscapes are like crossword the more time you spend studying them the better you become at interpreting them and the more your knowledge will increase. With this knowledge, an observant eye, and an enquiring mind, you will discover new things even in the most familiar areas.
Within each trail a range of landscape features, from castles and abbeys to cottages and earthworks is described and their significance explained and maps and illustrations are included.
