Trade PB (pen and ink drawings, maps) Vintage guidebooks have a charm all their own, both as windows into what their subject area was like "back when" and as challenges to modern-day tourists or explorers to seek out whatever traces might remain today. And when a book like this one -- which was conceived largely as a nostalgic exercise to begin with -- has aged yet another 45 years, the nostalgia factor sort of doubles down on itself, and the natural impulse (mine, anyway) is to wonder how many of these small-town landmarks, already considered throwbacks in 1973, might still survive even today? For instance, is it possible one could find even a trace of Ma Dixon's Restaurant, a soul-food oasis in Val Verde, California -- itself a remnant of a time when the town was known as "the black Palm Springs" -- which according to the book had already closed in 1973 (although there's a beautiful full-page drawing of the place, described as "a topsy-like complex of buildings centered around two old street cars")? And what of the "water-tower houses" in Dinuba? The Hotel Jacumba, in Jacumba? The Agricultural College in Heber? Fire up your GPS and go exploring. …

Welcome to ReadInk (rhymes with "Dead Ink"), now in our 29th year of putting interesting books into the hands of interested people. **** Although I occasionally lapse into the "royal we" voice, ReadInk is just me, from one end of the pipeline to the other: buying, cataloging, customer service, shipping, you name it. Nothing here is automated, and every order or inquiry gets my prompt, personal attention. **** In describing a book's physical condition, I employ standard book-grading terminology (Good/Very Good/Fine, with various in-between gradations as appropriate) and do my best to avoid both excessive jargon and overly-finicky detail. My goal is always to present a faithful impression of a book's condition and appearance; significant flaws are individually noted, or if too numerous are succinctly summarized. **** Books are more than just physical objects, however: they are also intellectual/information vessels, and in almost every case I also include some information about a book's content in my listing, even if it's only a carefully chosen quotation from the dust jacket copy. (This may sound like a small thing, but take a look sometime and you'll see how amazingly few sellers bother with this, especially in the case of older fiction, which is one of my specialties.) **** I take great care (and pride) in my packaging of books for shipment; I figure it's my responsibility to ensure that each book I send out will withstand the rigors of the U.S. Postal System, and will reach its new owner in the same condition as advertised. All orders will be processed promptly and shipped within 48 hours, barring unforeseen circumstances. We grade our books conservatively (Fine being our highest grade, used only for books with no discernible flaws) and package them liberally: most hardcover books are sent in boxes, securely wrapped and cushioned, and with the dust jacket (if present) protected by a new mylar cover. We provide a concise, accurate description of the condition of every book (and a scanned image of the actual book on offer); please get in touch by email if you need additional information. All books are returnable for a full refund if not A-OK.
Shipping terms
We offer free Media Mail shipping for all domestic (U.S.) orders, and endeavor to keep our Priority Mail rates as reasonable as possible. International shipping in most instances will be via USPS First Class International mail, at the posted rates. Only on rare occasions do we request additional shipping charges, when warranted by the weight or value of the book. Our first priority always is TOP-QUALITY PACKAGING, for MAXIMUM PROTECTION of your book, and we will never compromise on this point.
