Exposition of the First Epistle of Peter, Considered in Reference to the Whole System of Divine Truth, Tr. by P. Fairbairn

Exposition Of The First Epistle Of Peter, Considered In Reference To The Whole System Of Divine Truth, Tr. By P. Fairbairn by Wilhelm Steiger is a two-volume exegetical and doctrinal work on 1 Peter. Steiger’s German original is rendered into English by Fairbairn for 19th-century readers, with translator’s Preface framing the project as a defense of scriptural authority against contemporary criticisms. The Introduction surveys the Epistle’s genuineness, authorship, and relation to Paul's letters and to Old Testament prophecy, and then undertakes a verse-by-verse exposition. The commentary emphasizes the substance of Peter’s message: election and sanctification by the Spirit; the living hope and heavenly inheritance secured by Christ’s blood; the call to holy living, patient suffering, and brotherly love; and the sovereignty of the Triune God in salvation. It treats such terms as elect, sprinkling, redemption, faith, and obedience with careful philology and theology, while engaging with historical debates about the Epistle’s audience and date. The volume reflects a deeply theological and exegetical aim: to ground Christian faith in the stable truth of Scripture.
