Item description from seller

1837 Treatise on the Power and Privileges of the House of Commons Ferrall, S[imon] A[nsley] [d.1844]. An Exposition of the Law of Parliament, As It Relates to the Power and Privileges of the Commons' House. To Which are Added, The Proceedings of the Principal Questions of Privilege Which Have Arisen in Parliament, And Those Cases Involving the Jurisdiction of the House, &c. Which Were Argued and Determined in the Courts of Westminster Hall. London: S. Sweet, 1837. iv, 446, [2] pp. Final leaf is a 2 pp. publisher advertisement. Octavo (8-1/4" x 5-1/4"). Later cloth, gilt title, fillets and library name to spine. Light fading to portions of boards, light rubbing to extremities, library bookplate and shelf label to front pastedown. Moderate toning to interior, light foxing and faint dampstaining in a few places, library stamps to title page and a few other leaves. $250. * Only edition. "Books of Parliamentary precedents have been published, containing valuable collections of proceedings on cases of Privilege, but these are in general too elaborate, and in some instances, the reasons not sufficiently defined to fix the attention of the practical politician. Scattered through the old law treatises, and the works of constitutional writers, are also to be found remarks tending to illustrate the Law of Parliament. It has been my object in compiling this work, to collect the principles of the law in a condensed and intelligible shape, from these sources, as well as from the Rolls and Journals; and thus strengthened, by the great legal authorities, to point out the power and privileges of the House of Commons" (3-4). Sweet & Maxwell, A Legal Bibliography of the British Commonwealth 2:120.
