London: John Murray, 1892. viii, 394p. including index, Octavo (20 x 14cm) Eleventh Thousand. On rear of title page is a single page of publishers ads for Uniform Editions of Charles Darwin, ad is undated. Includes Sept. 2, 1889 preface by Francis Darwin. With 21 engravings, and seven black and white heliotype photographic plates. Two of the seven heliotypes have (I & VI) have separated where tipped-in. Publisher s green cloth with gilt titles to spine, blind stamped ruled border and decoration to front and rear board. Chalk-board black paste-downs includes early owner s bookplate, occasional light pencil markings in end matters, otherwise text block is unmarked. Last free leaf between index and rear paste-down separated from binding. Moderate rubbing and a few marks to cloth, head and tail of spine show modest fraying, shelfwear. Aside from two loose plates, and let free leaf, very good. First published in 1872, 'The Expression of the Emotions' was the only book by Darwin to be illustrated with photographs, and was one of the first books to feature heliotype plates. 'This is an important member of the evolutionary set. This is an apparent later printing of the 1890 second edition from Murray. See Darwin Online which notes this 1892 edition as F1149, as F1147, but eleventh thousand which is as F1146, the 1890 second edition. In addition to a large collections of 19th century children’s books, and adult fiction we have a broad array of art books, reference materials, religion and philosophy. Lately I have been cataloguing 19th century travelogues. Also available is a large collection of 19th century and early 20th century periodicals, some bound, some still in their original condition: The Atlantic Monthly, Harper’s, The Century Illustrated, Lippincott’s, Putnam, The North American Review, Scribner’s, St. Nicholas Magazine. Many are not yet listed so inquiries for specific editions are welcomed. Publication dates tend to run from about 1780 to about 1960.…

Terms of sale
A note on private sales.
Often potential buyers ask for the opportunity to purchase from me directly rather than through the AbeBooks portal where they found the listing, usually for a slightly lower price. Presumably the benefit to me is some marginal savings on commissions or tax. The convenience of having all my record keeping and billing being handled through one platform outweighs any small savings. In addition, I believe the service AbeBooks provides—putting these books in front of potential buyers—is worth the fee they earn.
A note on pricing.
As of this writing I am not a member of any trade association wherein members are expected to give one another a specified discount. As a general rule I attempt to set my prices so that my listing is the lowest priced available item of a similar described condition with photographs. So I know my listing price is at the low end.
A note on the photography.
The AbeBooks platform only allows the display of five photographs. Often this is sufficient to exhibit the book’s condition, any important publication data, and possibly one interesting characteristic. However, a book with multiple illustrations, foldouts, unique printing defects that resolve its value or print run, or isolated areas of damage that warrant disclosure may require additional information. In these cases I often have additional photographs which can be shared via email.
Shipping terms
Oversized or heavy items shipped internationally, or shipped domestically by priority mail, may require additional postage. Most often, but not in all cases, this is noted in the description. In these cases we will request additional postage before completing the transaction.
When an object is returned as undeliverable by USPS to a specified address (e.g. in NYC) no second attempt will be made. Douglas Park will cancel the sale, issue a refund, and absorb the shipping loss.
