Extracts From My Note-Book From 1831-1854

A Quaker voice keeps watch as Britain changes. Fierce moral clarity, quietly lived. In these Extracts From My Note-Book From 1831-1854, Josiah Forster offers historical memoir excerpts drawn from a private record kept through the heart of the nineteenth century. The tone is plain, the attention exact: spiritual self-scrutiny, meetings of conscience, and the daily texture of a Victorian England diary. Read as a quaker spiritual journal and a historical journal collection, the entries open a window on 1830s 1850s Britain, when faith, commerce, and politics collided. Forster writes from within the Society of Friends history, where quaker pacifism tradition and practical service shaped public action. Without ornament, he charts the moral weather of the age: the pull of Victorian social reform, the urgency of an anti-slavery movement diary, and the steady witness of quaker abolitionist writings. For readers of primary source collection material, these pages illuminate how reform was lived day by day; for collectors, they stand as a rare, intimate document of Quaker life and thought. Its restrained prose carries the cadence of the meeting-house, while its scope reaches beyond the private page. As a nineteenth century diary, it supplies historians and general readers with lived evidence of belief in action, and it deepens any shelf of Victorian-era reform literature in Britain and beyond. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike.
