Reviews
The eyes have it in this compelling examination of optical illusions. Some of the illusions are well-known graphic tricks; e.g., two lines appear to be of different lengths because arrows at their extremities point in opposite directions (the lines, of course, are identical). But most demand active participation. An envelope attached inside the back cover contains items to facilitate certain illusions (e.g., a pair of 3-D glasses causes images to "leap off the page!"; acetate sheets printed with concentric circles or squares can be rotated atop certain illustrations to create moire patterns). Pull-tabs turn a reflective surface into a "fun house mirror"; demonstrate the effects of afterimages; etc. Other illusions here are created by devices, with models for two pop-up kaleidoscopes and a zoetrope. Instructions for making a flip-book and two other optical illusions conclude the book. Hewetson's text will easily draw in the reader with historical tidbits, explanations that avoid unnecessary complexities, and frequent questions to her audience. Eye-catching indeed. All ages.
