About this Item
A later printing of the first UK edition published in 1945 during the Second World War. The book was first published in the UK in October 1929 in a larger format, and first published in the USA by Charles Scribner's & Sons also in 1929. ***Near fine in light-blue cloth-covered boards with silver titles to the spine. The silver is still beautifully bright. Edges of boards just slightly rubbed. Head and tail of spine unworn. Corners sharp. Internally also near fine with no offsetting to the endpapers and no inscriptions. Interior pages clean. Thin paper remains uncreased. Spine tight. **In a very good colour printed dustwrapper that has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publishers price of 6s. net. The dustwrapper is largely complete, with just slight loss at the top and tail of the spine. There is also a small scuff tear to the back panel. The spine of the dustwrapper is slightly darkened [please see scans]. ***335 pages. ***185mm x 125mm. ***'It is a most beautiful, moving and human book.' (V. Sackville West) ***'A novel of great power, by an extremely talented and original artist.' (Times Literary Supplement) ***'A masterpiece of imaginative omissions, and the ending is quite unforgettable in its pathos.' (Daily Telegraph) - Review quotes taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper. ***'"A Farewell to Arms" is set during the Italian campaign of World War One. First published in 1929, it is a first-person account of an American, Frederic Henry, serving as a lieutenant "tenente" in the ambulance corps of the Italian Army. The title is taken from a poem by the 16th-century English dramatist George Peele. The novel, set against the backdrop of World War One, describes a love affair between the expatriate Henry and an English nurse, Catherine Barkley. Its publication ensured Hemingway's place as a modern American writer of considerable stature. The book became his first best-seller, and has been called "the premier American war novel from that debacle World War One.' (Wiki) ***A later printing of the first UK edition, re-issued in this smaller wartime economy format in 1944, and reprinted in 1945. The book retains the original and fragile wartime dustwrapper. The book and dustwrapper are in unusually nice condition, without any major faults - very uncommon in this condition. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Seller Inventory # 7899
