Inscription in neat old hand on front free endpaper dated 1888. Small brown spot on title-page. Some occasional brown spots at periphery through text, but generally quite a clean copy. First published in 1835 as "Slavery in the United States". The narrative was ghost-written by Redwood S. Fisher from oral sessions with CHARLES BALL. This edition was abridged from 517pp. to 430pp. in 1858 leaving out accounts of Charles Ball's grandfathjer's religion and all references to Ball's participation in the War of 1812.
