Chapter One
DEEP HEALING AND THE E3 PROCESS I was sitting in a dark psychology classroom, rays of light shining over my shoulder onto a silver screen. The loud rhythmic clicking of the projector distracted me from the chatter of the other students. The film was introducing case histories of various personality disorders. This seemingly inconsequential film had me riveted. I was particularly interested in the case of a woman with multiple personality disorder, and the manifestation of her two very distinct personalities. I was fascinated that whenever she shifted from one personality to the other, her physical appearance changed dramatically as well. There were demonstrative morphological changes in her posture, facial expressions, and gait. What wasn't clear to me then but is very clear now, is that these physical changes were in response to changes in her thoughts, beliefs and interactions with life events. Her two personalities had completely different personal beliefs therefore she reacted differently to the same life events depending on which personality was present.
This phenomenon is much the same in the case of monozygotic twins. These are twins that occur when a single egg is fertilized to form one zygote, which then divides into two separate embryos. The twins have identical DNA, but likely do not share the same personalities. Two genetically identical beings should develop into virtually identical adults but they do not. This proves that personality is not rigidly tied to DNA. Also, these genetically identical twins do not necessarily develop the same propensity for disease, longevity, and IQ. Each twin not only has a unique hardwired personality but each experiences life in their own unique way. From the very moment of conception, each twin's unique personality steers their destiny and their physical development. As the twins age, they become more distinct.
Traditional psychological theory further supports the idea that personality is linked to physicality. The psychologist William Herbert Sheldon Jr. correlated body morphology to personality type, organizing people into three primary types: endomorph, ectomorph and mesomorph. There are other theories as well correlating body shape, posture, and facial expressions with personalities and disease, particularly in the field of bioenergetics. The idea that personality can alter the physicality of the human being as it grows and develops has become clear to me as a physician. The longer we live the more our thoughts manifest our physicality.
The multiple personality patient in the film had different physical pathology in each of her personalities. One personality had symptoms of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The symptoms of this autoimmune disease are a red or malar rash below her eyes, inflamed and painful joints, and a mildly elevated blood level of rheumatoid factor. When the patient manifested the second personality for a sustained period of time, those SLE symptoms would disappear. The second personality had cardiac symptoms, including mitral valve pathology. It became clear to me that dis-ease was impermanent and that it could be changed and even eradicated by altering the personality. Idiopathic diseases came to my mind. These diseases have no known cause or origin and they often have an autoimmune component, where the body shuts down or even attacks itself for no known reason.
Here is an example from my own practice. I received a call from a distressed mother whose son had gone off to college and he started to experiment with drugs. While under the influence of the drugs, her son was involved in an altercation and sustained a head trauma. His behavior became more extreme, to the point he would be classified as psychotic. Though the head trauma caused no physical damage, he outwardly looked so different that his family and friends had a hard time believing he was the same guy. His mother, his girlfriend and many of his long-term friends were baffled because his whole demeanor changed completely and the more paranoid and delusional he became, the more pronounced the change was in his physical appearance. Unfortunately, these psycho-emotional changes also affected his internal physiology which in turn affected his overall health status. Physicality is intimately connected to the energetic blueprint of the body.
The E3 technique starts with energetics. This term comes from the physics principle that all things of this world exist in a minimum of two different states. One state is physical and the other is energetic and scientists have come to realize that matter exists in both these states simultaneously. Everything in our physical world is made up of atomic and eventually, subatomic particles. Albert Einstein devoted over twenty years of his life discerning whether subatomic particles were particles of physicality, or if they existed as waveforms of energy. Today we know matter exists in both states and even more exciting is the ease with which matter can move from one form to another.
This is important in E3 because the laws of physics remind us that consciousness, thoughts, and beliefs are all energetic forms, dwelling in the energetic realm. Energy is the precursor to physicality, so our thoughts are the precursor to our physical body. Science is increasingly supporting the hypothesis that the thoughts we carry within our minds create the physicality of our bodies. That physicality can be one of harmony and health, but it can also be one of chaos and dis-ease. This tells us that harmonizing things on an energetic level has great potential for altering our physical bodies. It is important that our energetic blueprint is free of stressors that can lead to the deterioration of the physical body.
Energetics can be used as a guide both diagnostically and as a treatment modality. When a patient comes for treatment without knowing the specific issue causing their stress, I let the energetic patterns of the body guide the treatment. I run my hand over the central part of the body without physically touching the patient, but sensing and screening for areas that lack energy flow. Kinesthetically, this feels like a decreased or absence of tingling in my hands and indicates to me that there is dysfunction in those areas. I verify my findings with a muscle test. After I identify the problem area, E3 is the vehicle to access the subconscious to receive diagnostic information. There are many diagnostic tests that can also be used as well for definitive diagnoses if physical dis-ease is found.
Energetics can also be used as a healing modality. The consciousness has the capacity to move, focus and intend changes through energetics. It is an imperative part of a healing practice to teach people how to treat themselves with the infinite life force of the universe. This is evidenced by the growing mountain of research regarding the power of prayer and energy in the healing process. Daniel J. Benor M.D., author of Spiritual Healing: Scientific Validation of a Healing Revolution, has created volumes of research with scientific methodology proving the efficacy of energy healing.
The first step in the E3 technique is to gain access to the issues that need to be resolved. The problem areas are localized through muscle testing. I begin by concentrating on the painful or dysfunctional area but I also utilize the chakras that correspond to a problem area. A chakra is a processing center for the body's energy, including emotional energy, conscious thoughts, and thoughts of every cell in the body. I use a seven chakra system, referenced on the following Emotional Chakra and Ethereal Chakra charts.
To find the problem area, I test the strength of a strong muscle, usually in the arm or shoulder muscles. If the muscle goes weak while the painful area is touched or while you hold your hand over the associated chakra area, this indicates the area being screened is an area of dysfunction. This dysfunction can be emotional, physical, nutritional deficit, or something else.
Imagine a client who presents with a diagnosis of nervous stomach or stomach ulcers. The first thing I do is to touch the area right over the stomach, or the chakra that corresponds to that area. Then I test to see if the arm muscle goes weak. If it does, it identifies a problem. This is called therapy localization. I then must discern whether the problem is entirely physical or if there is an emotional component. I stop touching the area of the stomach and state, "Test the idea of a physical issue." I test the muscle strength again and if the muscle still goes weak, this determines that the problem is physical in nature. If the muscle remains strong, it indicates that the problem is not physical, and I would then evaluate if an emotional component is involved. It is important to always investigate the physical problem first. Problems in the physical realm take priority and may need immediate attention. The emotional problem often does not surface until you have revealed the physical problem.
So assuming I am dealing with a physical problem, I must differentiate and rule out the origins of the physical problem. I test possibilities such as bacterial infections, inadequate nutrition, allergies or something else. After I determine the origins of the physical problem, I test for what treatment or therapy will benefit or resolve it. I may test the efficacy of homeopathy, acupuncture, medication, chiropractic manipulative therapy, nutrition and even if further diagnostic evaluation is necessary. The muscle will go weak when I find the appropriate therapy.
My clinical experience has shown that dysfunction and dis-ease are common amongst patients who internalize stress. I define `stress' as the result of beliefs or desires about events or people that conflict with one's expectations about how the world or people should be. I call the many stresses in our life `emotional dynamics.' Some examples are loneliness, betrayal, disappointment, lack of control, or not feeling good enough.
Behind each of these emotional dynamics is a belief system that is in conflict with reality and is causing the person stress. The more we hold onto such beliefs, the more stress we have. The more stress we have, the more our body becomes handicapped and dis-eased. I believe that idiopathic and perhaps other dis-eases are a result of long-term emotional and energetic dysfunction. Further, certain personalities may be more prone to certain dis-eases.
Usually there are multiple layers and interwoven connections to an emotional dynamic. Take the issue of abandonment. Loss and grief are of the same nature as they manifest with similar feelings. But issues of control or the need for power might be connected to abandonment, if the patient experiencing abandonment tries to exert control over the people in order to keep them from leaving. Feelings of powerlessness or lack of control are not exactly the same as abandonment and grief but they can all be connected. One may need to navigate through each of these emotional dynamics before the core issue of abandonment can be released. Although there are guidelines and protocols associated with E3, emotions are not governed by logical patterns. The process of harmonizing the emotions will take many twists and turns.
Of course, there are other causative factors for dis-ease such as chemical contamination, pathogens, carcinogens, and trauma. There can also be hereditary factors that contribute. The personality creates a matrix of belief systems that dictate how we interpret and internalize our life events. If we can change our personality, and all that entails, we can affect our susceptibility to the dis-ease process. My own clinical and life experience brings me to believe that our physical well being depends on our actions and how we interpret the events of life. To reverse the dis-ease process, we must determine what part of our belief system is causing stress.
Every cell in the body has a unique consciousness, the capacity to perceive and process, and to give feedback. Our organs are colonies of cells that share a common function. Eastern medicine has long recognized that certain organs are more apt to process certain emotions. Some people process issues in their stomach with resulting ulcers or gastric reflux. Others process their stress in their intestines and suffer irritable bowel syndrome or colitis. Processing issues in the heart can result in arrhythmias, tachycardia, and high blood pressure. Back pain, tendonitis or fibromyalgia is often caused by holding stress in the muscles and connective tissue. People that hold stress in the neurologic system can end up with migraines and other neurological symptoms. Another classic example is people that harbor resentment. The classic place to hold and process this stress is in the kidneys. Of course, different people with different personalities could process the same issues in different parts of the body. E3 has the flexibility to allow the practitioner to find where the emotional dynamic is being processed.
Whatever the case, if we choose not to work on the issues, the life force energetically holds its breath. If this is the case, then after a time, the physicality begins to break down and it will manifest as dis-ease. I do not contend that every malady known to the human body comes from stress, but I believe it is accurate to say that all dis-eases have a psychological component and some dis-eases are a direct result of the chaos or stress within our consciousness. The exciting part of this work is that there are many ways of detecting emotional issues. Using therapy localization, the patient will be asked to recall a concept, a feeling, memories, dreams, or images as the practitioner touches the area of concern. If the arm muscle tests weak, the practitioner has localized the problem or issue. There are a plethora of doors that lead to quickly and efficiently accessing the issues that create dis-ease.
Another component in the E3 process is determining whether or not it is in the client's highest and best interest to use the next E3 tool called future probabilities. The future is not set in stone but is the outcome of a wave of collapsing probabilities. Sometimes crucial pieces in the puzzle have not yet been decided upon. Imagine how easily we would change our thoughts and behaviors if we knew who and what was involved when the issue resurfaced. We have trained ourselves to have a knee-jerk or conditioned response to most events in life; future possibility planning reinforces new behaviors. I look for who or what will be the trigger for a future event. I will be discussing this in depth in subsequent chapters.
How exactly does stress and chaos show up in the body as physical dis-ease? When dis-ease comes from a psychological paralysis or addiction to a non-harmonious belief system, it usually comes after years of dysfunction and warning signs. These are meant to awaken you to the fact that you have a belief system that must be altered. The usual response to fears and lack of control is the immediate release of neurochemicals such as adrenaline and epinephrine. These are the classic chemicals, among others, used by the body for the fight or flight response. Our cardiovascular system jumps into action, speeds up, and pushes fuel and oxygen throughout the muscular system. There is a price to pay for mobilizing these energy stores. The body can handle the infrequent physical stress of being chased by a saber-toothed tiger or attack by an enemy. If this response is continuously over used, the body becomes vulnerable to deterioration and dis-ease. These neurochemicals are also released due to psycho-emotional stress and thus can be present all day long. We cannot run fast enough or escape this and there is no time for recharging and repair. Psycho emotional stress is not the only reason for this neurochemical response. In today's world, we use the fight or flight mechanism to be productive, to multitask and to do battle at work. Most of us have become addicted to this chemical response and feel we cannot get through life without being jacked-up. Our addiction to adrenal producing substances such as caffeine is evidence for this.
The simple explanation is that every cell in our body responds to neurochemicals, hormones and the communications of thoughts and feelings. When we shut down or function out of depression, anger, fear or hurt, the cells follow suit. Internalizing negative thoughts means that the cells are living in a dis-eased state and the organs, which are comprised of these cells, become dis-eased in the emotional processing. Over time, the body collapses under the weight of the unrelenting stress and dysfunction and pathology ensues.
