Dark blue cloth. f/piece+xix+317, 9 further plates (1 actually an unf.table) ex-pagination; top corner fr.pastedown has early owener's sig.+address, which is very unsightly - it was originally overlaid with white paper trips on top the strips of narrow sellotape with a further inscrip. of some kinds which rendered it all an incoherent mess, using my Holmesian skills I removed the sellotape, which while also removing the very surface layer of paper revealed the North Wales address of Nathaniel Jo (seph?) etc., though it is hardly really legible. Though an improvement it still does not look pretty. Otherwise it is internally good, tight, clean, unmarked bar v.occ. sm.brown flecks, fore-edge also has sm.brown flecks; covers minimally worn bar sm.nick top sp. but marred by scatter of faint sm.whitish spots on fr., possibly due to mould at some point, These seem to respond to an ordinary eraser. This has very thorough coverage of the pioneers of (and controversies regarding) fingerprinting notably Henry Faulds (to whom credit is, it is argued, really dues), William Herschel and Francis Galton, a number of actual cases and the campaign to get Faulds recognised.
