12mo. 7 1/4 in. x 4 1/2 in. Quarterbound calf over plain tan boards with black lettering. Sewn binding. Shelf-worn and still quite solidly bound. 192 pp. Extraordinarily logically laid out and clear. Designed as an introduction to the larger work, on the "Analysis of Sentences", the author's goal being to "simplify the system, without depriving it of anyof its essential characteristics -- to reduce it, and yet retain its spirit." Some browning to text pages. Pen trials (pencil) to pastedowns. 192 pp. Scarce. Samuel Stillman Greene (1810-1883) was an educator, writer, superintendent of a number of schools, and a polymath who, during his lifetime, turned his scholarly and accomplished eye to grammar (this was the first of eight separate books on grammar) mathematics, civil engineering, natural philosophy and astronomy.
