Item description from seller

Large stiff paper card, H 19.4cm x L 13.5cm. Chromolithographic embossed illustration of white and red flower-filled green vase on verso. Printed at bottom right corner is "Herzlichen Gluckwunsch" which translates from German to English as "Congratulations." Slender 2cm wide chip at center top edge fractionally penetrating image past white border area; 2cm wide by 1cm deep chip to top right corner; short closed tear at bottom right; faint foxing spots evident upon image with small patches of surface abrasion at lower left. Card's lightly soiled white recto has three separate advertising statements which all appear to have been stamped on (rather than printed) after the card was embossed as evidenced by variances in the ink applications, i.e. points of smudging as well as lack of clean and even contact across the surface particularly to the right bottom advertising circle which has several lines of text which are difficult to discern. Top square-shaped ad (approx 3.25cm square): TRY FITCH'S RUBBERTOLU CHEWING GUM. Two circular ads (each 6.5cm diameter). Left circle: TRY FITCH'S INFALLIBLE COUGH AND CONSUMPTION CURE FOR COUGHS, COLDS AND BRONCHIAL AFFECTIONS. Right circle: TRY IT! TO CLENSE THE BREATH. FOR INDIGESTION. FOR DYSPEPSIA. SINGERS AND SPEAKERS. TO CLEAR YOUR THROAT. AS A SUBSTITUTE FOR TOBACCO, IT HAS NO EQUAL. SEE THAT THE NAME NECTAR TOLU IS ON EACH AND EVERY PIECE. BEWARE OF IMITATIONS. A good copy. Aforementioned verso flower chromolithograph is, of course, undated but is fairly typical of Victorian-era American advertising circa mid-1860s to 1880s. Online searches indicate Dr. S.S. Fitch or Samuel Sheldon Fitch (1801-1876) authored a number of medical books (including a popular treatise regarding the lungs and pulmonary consumption, i.e. tuberculosis) between the 1830s to the 1870s. Presumably the operations of Fitch's patent medicine company would correspond to at least the latter half of that date range thus offering some correlation to this trade card. Furthermore the card was found among unrelated correspondence and ephemera dating between 1864 to 1880.…
