Images: one is 4 ½" x 7 ¼"; four are 7 ¼" x 4 ½". Mounts: one is 5 ¾ x 8"; four are 8" x 5 ¾". The silver albumen prints of Glenwood, Colorado are affixed to yellow mounts imprinted with Rose & Hopkins, Scenic Photographers, Tabor Block, 16th and Larimer Sts., Denver Colo. The Rose & Hopkins photograph studio operated in Denver from 1896 to 1901, and is best known for its portraits of Native Americans. Captions are written in white within the image: 185 Grand Stairway "The Colorado" Glenwood; The Bath House Glenwood, 282; 279 Glenwood Springs; and 194. Room 237, The Colorado, Glenwood. The caption of the fifth photograph is faded but appears to read 138, Grand Ballroom The Colorado. Built in 1893, the Hotel Colorado is one of the oldest hotels in the state. Designed as a replica of the Villa de Medici, the hotel quickly became a popular summer retreat, earning the nickname of "the little White House of the West" after extended visits by Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft. The teddy bear is alleged to have been invented during President Roosevelt's 1905 visit when the hotel's maids presented him with a stuffed bear pieced together with scraps of fine material. The images are overall in very good condition. History Colorado, the Denver Public Library, The Library of Congress, and The Amon Carter Museum of Art have holdings of Rose & Hopkins images; however, these specific photographs could not be found in any holdings.
