Four sales by this notable dealer. Felix Schlessinger was a relation of Leo Hamburger, who operated a successful auction firm in Frankfurt. Felix joined the Hamburger company in 1911, but his early years as a professional numismatist were interrupted by the First World War, in which he was wounded. He established his own firm and moved to Berlin in 1928, where he began to conduct auctions. The first and fourth catalogues present here offer excellent collections of the coinage of Brunswick and Hamburg, respectively. The second and third constitute the second and third offerings of coins from the collection of Edmund Nordheim, focusing on medieval and modern coins of Germany, Italy and Spain (the third sale also includes Nordheim s numismatic library). Schlessinger and his wife were killed au Auschwitz during the war, with their son Max (later Mark Salton) escaping and eventually emigrating to the United States where he continued the family s numismatic legacy.
