About this Item
256 pages, 301 b/w and 12 color photographs, 38 drawings. A handsomely mounted, relatively unheralded, important exhibition of Kongo funerary art was held at the National Gallery of Art in 1981 and 1982. This striking catalogue of that exhibition contains lengthy, important essays by the curators/authors and fine photographs of figures in the exhibition--89 objects drawn from museum and private collections throughout the world, including many from the Institut des Musees Nationaux du Zaire. Many of the objects--principally stone grave monument figures, wooden funerary shrine figures, terracotta grave markers, and reliquary and divination mannequins--have never before been exhibited in the United States or appeared in print. Included in the catalogue is a heavily illustrated essay that deals with the tradition of Kongo funerary art in the New World. An excellent, important publication dealing with objects of great beauty and rarity. Seller Inventory # 10069
