About this Item
4 typescript poems on 8.5" x 11" stock. The group includes "Gargoyle of the Century" (2pp.); "Progress Report on Mankind for Inclusion in History Texts of Hilarity" (1p.); "The Torn Silent Monster" (1p.); "Purification Shock" (1p.). Old folds from mailing, impression from a slightly oxidized paper-clip to upper left corners, with one small holograph correction to "Gargoyle." Together with a 1-page autograph letter from Blazek to Gail Chiarello (ca.105 words), dated 7-9-70 and mailed from Blazek's Sacramento address; old folds, else well-preserved, in the roughly-opened original mailing envelope. Interesting group of items from the native Chicago poet and one of the principal figures of the mimeo revolution. Chiarrello was a poet, editor, and secretary to Lawrence Ferlinghetti; in his letter Blazek mentions the inclusion of the aforementioned poems for "the basement mimeo caper." He goes on to express his appreciation for Ferlinghetti's 1970 work Back Roads to Far Towns After Basho, mentioning he owns just about everything Ferlinghetti has written. "Gargolye of the Century" and "Progress Report on Mankind" were published in New Directions 24: An International Anthology of Prose and Poetry (1972), though we remain unclear as to whether the Basement Lights "mimeo caper" was ever pulled off.
