The letters, dating from 1967 to 1972, request his college writing teacher's help in securing various fellowships & teaching positions. One note reads "[I] want like crazy to attend, largely because Dickey will be conducting the poetry workshop." In all, totalling approximately 800 words, with a manuscript addition of some 40 words to one letter. One envelope, addressed in manuscript. Butler's first book, WEST OF HOLLYWOOD, was not published until 1980.
