About this Item
Vol 3. (Part 1): marbled endpapers, 487 pp., slipped in 1879 school prize label of Lycee Saint-Louis; fairly trivial patch of surface loss to upper front pastedown, a few small foxing spots towards front, mostly to top margin, t.p. affected; otherwise internally clean, tight and unmarked; covers clean and almosy unworn with bright spine gilt lettering and logo centre front cover of the Lycee St. Louis / Universite de France (note that prize label has 'Academie de Paris'), a few minor rubbings to spine panel ridges and spots to front joint, main problem however is serious pigment loss to the cloth baords; Vol.4 (Part II): 532 pp., as Vol.3 without prize label but marbled endpapers fine, again some minor foxing to top margins towards front but also occ. from about p.500, though heavier from p.517 to end, this mostly to outer margin, otherwise internally clean, tight and unmarked; covers clean and unworn, trace of sruface rubbing to centre back and lower front but this of little significance, again 3 rubbing spots to front joint (where surface slightly proud due to underlying stitching). THes two Volumes are devoted entirely to the preiod immediately before Descartes, Descartes, Spinzo, Malebranche, Leibniz and Pere Andre, much of this concerns the corrspondence between these various parties and a few others. Cousin was the most prominent early 19th century French mainstream philospher, advocatinbg and Eclecticist position. The full 5th ed. consisted of 5 vols. The first edition of this work played a major role in establishing Cousin's reputation. Scarce outside France.
