FREDERICK H. VARLEY

This breathtaking book celebrates the life and art of Frederick H. Varley, Canada's greatest portrait artist and an innovative member of the famed Group of Seven. His best-known painting, Stormy Weather, Georgian Bay, still stands as a symbol of the work of the Group of Seven and is widely considered one of the three greatest paintings in the history of Canadian art.

Varley's magnificent paintings are complemented by a moving biographical-autobiographical text written by his son, Peter Varley, and are accompanied by an informative commentary drawn from Varley's letters, his conversations with friends and family, and his own personal recollections. Joyce Zemans contributes an insightful discussion of the progress of Varley's work from traditional English landscapes to the height of his achievements as an artist.

Peter Varley is a photographer, filmmaker, and creator of the Varley inventory, a complete catalogue and visual record of the works and life of his father, Frederick Varley. Joyce Zemans is an expert in the field of Canadian art and a specialist on the work of the Group of Seven. Jean Sutherland Boggs is the former director of the National Gallery and the Philadelphia Museum of Fine Arts.
