A FINE fourth edition (1850), rarely found in this superb condition. Full polished calf, ruled borders in gilt, 6.5 in. high. Five raised bands and six compartments to spine, four of the latter with elaborate and attractive gold tooling and two in black leather with gilt lettering. All clean marbled edges. Clean and bright covers which are also tight, firm and square. Combed, marbled end-papers. Half-titles with acknowledgment; publisher's dolphin and anchor device to title pages. VI has 'advertisement' by the editor (H N Coleridge) as well as an Object and Plan of the Work and a Synoptic Table of Contents. pp. [i-xxi], 270. V2 pp. 250. V3 pp. 329. Each volume's title page has the neat signature: "Louisa G A A Boyce" (nee Murray) 1822-1891. Louisa Georgiana Augusta Anne Boyce was the natural daughter of General George Murray and Lady Louisa Erskine, a married woman who had entered into an 'open cohabitation' with Murray. Daughter Louisa 's later marriage to Lieutenant Henry G. Boyce was blighted by these circumstances. Spending much time in Italy, Louisa became a famous benefactress in the Italian region of Imperia, Liguria, and especially in Vallecrosia where she funded much rebuilding after the 1887 earthquake and there founded The Evangelical Asylum. A beautiful gift set with an interesting provenance. This edition contains Coleridge's last corrections to the work along with an Appendix and Synoptic Table of contents. 10% price reduction applied.
