About this Item
Stockholm, A. Zetterberg, 1793. 8:o. Engraved portrait,(8),144 pp. & 1 engraved plate & 4 pp. with engraved music. Late 19th-century dark brown marbled half calf with raised bands, gilt spine and red label. Red edges. Small oval label with numbering in ink at the bottom of spine. Spine rubbed and faded in parts. Engraved portrait somewhat soiled. Title with MS ink note stating that the work's translator is Bellman. Occasional foxing and spotting. Small stain in the margin on p. 144. Signature of H. Schröderheim on an old endpaper which has been bound in, and the signature "J:S:" in ink. From the library of Ludvig Kahn. All published. Translated by C. M. Bellman who also has written a short poem "Till konungen" [To the King], a foreword and the text to the small musical piece. The music was composed by Uttini. The plate, which is a kind of idealized depiction of Gellert's grave, was engraved by J. F. Martin from an original by L. Masreliez. Martin has also engraved the portrait from a wax bust belonging to Lars von Engeström. Carl Michael Bellman (1740-95) is one of Sweden's national poets and his importance for Swedish literature has been compared to the influence that Shakespeare has had on English literature. The signature problably belongs to Herman Schröderheim (1818-79), who was a military officer and a relative of Bellman's friend Elis Schröderheim. Seller Inventory # 49689A
