Early owner's name on title-page and elsewhere. ***** Samuel Croxall's 'Fables of Aesop and others', first published in 1722, was a landmark in Aesop collections and illustrations. One of the most substantial collections of the 18th century, it contains 196 oval illustrations and was written to compete with the l'Estrange collection of 1692. According to Edward Hodnett, 'there is no doubt that [Elisha] Kirkall drew the designs and engraved them in relief on metal and he deserves the credit for introducing to England the white-line technique followed by Bewick'.
