In fair condition. Fragile. Boards are moderately worn with scuffing and dryness. Edges dried with red rot. Spine Alfred and nearly perished with large tear to leather at center. Ends are chipped with binding exposed. Leather scuffed overall. Bookplate of Vermont Senator James H. Phelps of West Townsend, Vermont on pastedown. Old hand early American signature of John B. Brown dated 1799 on pastedown and rear fly. Front board tender at joints. Front gutter tender as well. Lacking front fly leaf. Interior lightly toned with minor age stain and foxing throughout. Free of known marginalia. Binding remains intact. Please see photos. Important provenance of Vermont Senator James Houghton Phelps. Phelps (1817-1893) graduated from Middlebury College in 1835, and served as lawyer, county judge and Vermont state representative and Senator.
