In her unusual book, About World War I Facial Injury and Reconstruction, Ann Gerike combines a well-researched and informative history of facial injury and reconstruction during World War I with twenty-two of her lyrical haunting poems, uncannily inhabited by the presence of the injured men. Dr. Gerike’s six-year study of the First World War focused on soldiers’ experience on the Western Front, where thousands of facial injuries were inflicted. Equally important was her access to the files (including case notes and photographs) of the thousands of facial injuries and their frequently successful repair performed at Queen Mary’s Hospital for the facially wounded south of London (1917-1925), which she viewed at the Gillies Archives in 1998.
