The title of this book refers to the many faces of transgender to focus on the fact that transgender persons are not people to be objectified or merely the subjects of ethical and medical analysis. Every trans person carries her or his own unique story and background and deserves to be shown the dignity and respect owed to every individual. The book aims at laying out the main ingredients of importance in properly situating transgender, without attempting a thorough analysis of every aspect of this subject. Challenging issues are studied: for example, pronoun usage and transgender reassignment surgery, with special attention to children who identify as transgender. This book addresses important questions on how theology and various religious faiths deal with transgender persons, with special emphasis on the Roman Catholic perspective. This book will be helpful in the ongoing struggles to contextualize the June 15, 2020 decision of the United States Supreme Court that protects LBGTQ+ persons from discrimination.

About the Author

Father Gerald Coleman is a member of the American Society of St. Sulpice (the Sulpicians), a Society of diocesan priests founded in Paris in the 17th century to prepare men for diocesan priesthood. This ministry has in the past number of years expanded to ongoing formation of priests. Fr. Coleman holds a master's degree from the University of San Francisco, a doctorate in moral theology from the University of St. Michael's College, Toronto, Canada, and a licentiate in Theology from St. Mary's Seminary & University in Baltimore. He taught moral theology at St. Patrick's Seminary & University in Menlo Park, CA, at the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, and at the School of Applied Theology in Oakland, CA. Fr. Coleman has authored numerous books and articles in pastoral, sexual, and medical ethics. He served as Vice President for Organization Ethics for the Daughters of Charity Health System, on ethics committees of several hospitals, and President/Rector of St. Patrick's Seminary & University for sixteen years.
