John Murray, London 1855, thrid edition; two volumes, 8vo, 130 x 195mm; pp viii, [9]-463 and iv, [5]-455; full calf, panelled spines gilt, red and green labels, marbled end papers and edges, gilt rules; the feet of the spines and more particularly the head of these is a little rubbed and with small tears on the head of the hinges of vII but nevertheless a firm, tight and generally clean copy; free end papers foxed and with that of vI; holograph inscription from one Eton pupil, Robert Pierpoint, to his friend, Fitzroy Paley Ashmore, on the occasion of the departure of one of them from Eton., dated Lent, 1864. . . . . . Sir Francis Head was Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada from 1835 until he used the colonial militia to put down the Mackenzie Rebellion in 1837.This work is a series of linked essays where Head drew entertainingly on his experiences during a visit to Paris in 1851 . . . . .
