Planche and with exquisite engravings by Joh Gilbert; frontis. engraving of the Marie-Catherine Baronne d'Aunoy has tissue guard; boards are not color pictorial as picture for a later ed., but stamped in gilt, as is the lettering; spine is missing but binding is firm. 607 p, most of them clean and unmarked but there is a closed tear (looks like slice with letter opener, along inner edge of p. 303; smudges on pp. 514-515; and stain on lower margin of wonderfullengraving showing a dashing Prince Cheri in horseback, confronting a dragon. A label on front paste down shows this to be part of a legacy and repeated use of a stamp reveals the name of the former owner on the front end page. Stories include Beauty and the Beast, the equally enchanting The White Cat (elements of which were incorporated into the Disney Beauty and the Beast) as well as the thrilling The Fair with Golden Hair; The Blue Bird; Princess Belle-Etoile and Prince Cheri; The Pigeon and the Dove; Green-Serpent; The Princess Carpillon; The Yellow Dwarf; Babiole; Gracieuse and Percinet; Princell Rosette; The Bee and the Orange Tree; The ram; Finette Cendron; Fortunee; The Beneficent Frog, The Hind in the Wood, Belle Belle; or, the Chevalier Fortune; Princess Printaniere; The Golden Branch; Prince Sprite; The Good Little Mouse. Mme. D'Aunoy lived in 17th c. France and was a friend of Charles Perrault. There were no other female writers of fairy tales at the time, and C.G. Jung believed that quite aside for great literary value her stories spoke particularly to the psyches of young girls, and revealed to him much about women.
