The Faith of Catholics, Confirmed by Scripture and Attested by the Fathers Ed. by J. Berington and J. Kirk. by J. Berington and J. Kirk

The Faith Of Catholics, Confirmed By Scripture And Attested By The Fathers Ed. By J. Berington And J. Kirk. By J. Berington And J. Kirk is an early 19th-century Catholic apologetic work edited by Joseph Berington and John Kirk. This Part 1 of a four-part excerpt presents a concise, polemical system of Catholic doctrine grounded in Scripture and the Fathers of the first five centuries. It argues that Catholic belief rests on divine revelation as interpreted by a living teaching authority—the Church—through apostolic succession, Councils, and Tradition, rather than private interpretation. It outlines the principal topics to be covered: justification, the sacraments (with emphasis on Penance, Extreme Unction, and Holy Orders), the liturgy, Marian devotion, the intercession of angels and saints, purgatory and prayers for the dead, the authority of the pope, and the Creed as defined by Pius IV. The work defends seven sacraments, the reality of the Eucharist, and the integrity of Rome's primacy, using patristic citations and early councils to establish continuity with antiquity.
