Fake News, True Facts and Legends in Clinical Engineering: Learn about common misunderstandings in Clinical Engineering and have fun at the same time!

Numerous misconceptions and myths have accumulated in the last 3-4 decades in clinical engineering (CE), also known as health technology management (HTM), in the inevitable process of becoming a mature profession. While some of them are not serious, others may cause harm to patients or, at least, waste precious limited resources, which is ill affordable by the healthcare industry due to the ever-rising costs. This book is the compilation of over a decade of presentations made by the author to challenge the conventional wisdom and uncover the truth. To make the more interesting to read, a series of tests—in the form of statements—is presented for the reader to decide whether they are false (fake news), true (true facts), or myths (legends). Each statement is then examined in detail (fact checked) to determine which is the right choice.

Binseng Wang is a principal with BSI, a health technology consulting company.  He is also currently Vice President, Program Management, for Sodexo Clinical Technology Management LLC.  Previously, Dr. Wang held similar roles for Sundance Enterprises, Aramark Healthcare Technologies, and MEDIQ.  He also worked as a visiting scientist at NIH and an adjunct professor at the Milwaukee School of Engineering.  He received the 2010 AAMI Clinical Engineering Achievement Award, the 2015 ACCE Lifetime Achievement Award and the 2019 AAMI-TRIMEDX John Hughes Iconoclast Award.  He was inducted into the Clinical Engineering Hall of Fame by ACCE in 2017. He earned a Doctor of Science degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and is a Certified Clinical Engineer.
