AT&T's divestiture was the largest corporate reorganization in history and has had international repercussions. It was a major development in American economic policy, and a prominent part of the deregulation movement of the late 1970s.

Temin (economics, MIT) and Galambos (history, Johns Hopkins) detail the company's struggle with regulators, competitors, and its own corporate culture. The authors present a comprehensive, technical study, but compared to David Halberstam's The Reckoning ( LJ 12/15/86), about the auto industry, this story lacks a grand sweep or theme. Established in 1971 in Denver's historic Park. Hill neighborhood, we are the oldest continuously operated not-for-profit bookstore in the Denver metro area. Managed by a seven-person Board of Directors and staffed entirely with community volunteers, we are able to offer a large selection of used books at low prices. As part of our mission to support community literacy, we provide funds to local school libraries to expand their collections, and donate to local programs focused on increasing reading proficiency itself as well as cultivating the joy of lifelong reading. Our surplus books have gone to area homeless shelters, senior citizen centers, jails, and even to Africa to help establish school and community libraries there.
