The novel follows the life of Clinton Brown, a young man who escapes his abusive father and becomes a drug addict and hustler in Hollywood. The novel depicts the dark side of the American dream, as well as the themes of alienation, identity, and sexuality. The book was published by E.P. Dutton and Co. in a fourth printing in September 1960 and has 272 pages. It was adapted into a film in 1962 starring Warren Beatty and Eva Marie Saint.
