The Fall of Jerusalem AD 70: The Siege, the Temple, and the End of an Age

In AD 66, Judea rebelled against Rome. Four years later, Jerusalem lay in ruins and its magnificent Temple was gone.

The Fall of Jerusalem AD 70 tells the extraordinary story of the revolt that brought the Roman Empire to the walls of Jerusalem.

It follows the defeat and humiliation of a Roman army, Vespasian's campaign through Judea, the remarkable survival of the Jewish commander Flavius Josephus, the bitter fighting between rival factions inside Jerusalem, and the arrival of Titus and his legions.

Then came the siege.

Jerusalem was surrounded. Food disappeared. Thousands attempted to escape. Famine consumed the city. And at its centre stood the Temple.

Drawing principally on Josephus's extraordinary eyewitness account, while questioning him where necessary, Antony Last tells the story of rebellion, siege, survival and destruction—and of the people caught between Jerusalem and Rome.
