Fallacies of the Faculty

Fallacies Of The Faculty by Samuel Dickson challenges the prevailing medical establishment of its era. Built as a sequence of lectures, the book argues for a new, natural system of medicine based on a unity of disease and a chrono-thermal doctrine: diseases are periodic, driven by temperature and brain-driven motions, and remedies should target remission periods to prevent recurrence. Dickson denounces bloodletting, purging, bleeding, and other traditional practices, criticizing the authority of medical schools and the use of the stethoscope while advocating a wide array of remedies (bark/quinine, arsenic, hydrocyanic acid, musk, iodines, and more) whose effects he explains through an electrical or galvanic framework. The work also critiques contemporary medical nosology and homeopathy, promotes experiential trial over dogma, and emphasizes the physician’s reliance on nature, temperature changes, and patient-specific responses. With vivid clinical anecdotes and polemical rhetoric, the text advocates reform in medical education, practice, and the patient-doctor relationship, presenting a radical reimagining of medical science in the 19th century.
