Fallacies of the Faculty, in a Ser. of Lectures

Fallacies Of The Faculty, In A Ser. Of Lectures by Samuel Dickson. This provocative medical work, delivered as a series of lectures in the early 19th century, attacks the prevailing medical establishment and calls for a radical reform in medical thinking and practice. Dickson argues that disease is best understood as a unified, periodic process—the Intermittent Fever (ague) serving as a model for all maladies—and that remedies act chiefly by altering temperature and bodily motion rather than by targeting supposed fixed causes or localized lesions. He denounces bloodletting, purgatives, and overreliance on dissection and “pathology,” insisting that truth lies in observing the living patient, recognizing the unity of disease, and treating through the cycles of remission. The Chrono-Thermal system foregrounds use of bark (quinine), arsenic, opium, hydrocyanic acid, and other agents during remissions, complemented by baths and travel for recovery. More a social critique of medical culture than a purely clinical treatise, the work uses cases and correspondence to argue for evidence, reform, and the education of rising generations in medicine.
